Atka the Wolf Enjoys Afterschool Fun with the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester
Mt. Kisco, NY (November 10, 2009) – Atka, a seven year old Arctic gray wolf, never fails to impress children and adults alike. A travelling ambassador wolf for the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC), Atka recently visited children at the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester. Club members in kindergarten through 12th grade learned about the misconceptions and mythology surrounding wolves, as well as how they play a vital role in the environment.
Founded in 1999, the WCC promotes wolf conservation by teaching about wolves, their relationship to the environment, and the human role in protecting their future. They operate as the preeminent facility in the eastern United States for the captive breeding and pre-release of endangered wolf species. In addition to an up-close encounter with Atka, Club members were taught that while wolves are not pets, they are not dangerous to people in the wild.
The South Salem-based WCC offers a variety of onsite programs for all ages in addition to traveling to schools, museums, nature centers, and libraries across the Northeast. For more information on the WCC and its mission, visit www.nywolf.org.
