Mount Kisco, New York (December 29, 2004) — Last month at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Northeast Regional Teen Supreme Keystone Conference in Lowell, Mass., the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester's Liberty Keystone Teen Advisory Council received two awards, one for Leadership Development, the other for the success of its annual Fashion Show. In addition, Teen Center Director Jean-Pierre La Cour garnered an award as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Northeast Regional Advisor of the Year. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester's Keystone Advisory Council consists of high school-age teens who meet weekly to develop leadership skills and participate in community service. Members help set and enforce the rules of the Club and Teen Center. They also participate in trips and conferences. The Keystone Conference in Lowell brought together over 350 teens and teen advisors to attend sessions related to sexuality, employment, self-esteem, and drug and alcohol abuse. The Leadership Development recognition honored a collaborative project undertaken by the Teen Advisory Council and Youth Theater Interactions, a repertory program in Yonkers, NY, for their original play, "A Rose is Still a Rose No Matter Where it Grows." Over 150 teens attended the show, which dealt with the topic of domestic violence by presenting vignettes about four girls grappling with violent relationships. The goal was to identify red flags that can signal abuse. The Advisory Council's other award, for Outstanding Contributions to Free Enterprise, honored the teens' work on their annual Fashion Show. Introduced four years ago, the show has evolved into one of the Boys& Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester's largest functions. On average, the show has raised $2,500 every year. Nominated for the Northeast Regional Advisor of the Year by members of the Advisory Club, Teen Center director Jean-Pierre La Cour's award is particularly gratifying. La Cour has worked with youth at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester for almost four years and has successfully implemented many programs. "I'm thrilled to receive this award," said La Cour. "But the kids are so wonderful that they make it easy for me." |
