Galo Trujillo Named Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year

Mount Kisco, N.Y. (April 12, 2005) — The Boys and Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester announced today that Galo Trujillo will be honored as the Youth of the Year. The nine-year member of the Club has been selected as the 2005 Youth of the Year, the highest honor the Club gives to one of its members. The national program, administered by Boys & Girls Clubs of America, recognizes exemplary character, superior leadership skills, academic achievement, outstanding service to Boys and Girls Clubs and community outreach.

This accomplishment earned Trujillo a $1,000 college scholarship from the Corporation for National Service and an additional $1,000 from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester. Trujillo will compete against other Boys & Girls Club youth for the New York State Youth of the Year title. Five regional winners selected among state winners will compete for the national honor in Washington, D.C., where the National Youth of the Year will officially be installed by the President in a White House ceremony in September. In addition, the winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship from The Reader's Digest Association, the sponsor of the program since its inception in 1947.

Seventeen-year-old Trujillo is a junior at Fox Lane High School, Bedford. He is Vice President of the Liberty Keystone and Teen Advisory Council and a junior staff member working with the Kindergarten Fun Club. Trujillo has played a significant role in many community-based programs including an Annual Domestic Violence Symposium entitled, "A Saving Hand," which helps teens cope with the dangers of aggressive behavior. In addition, Trujillo is part of a community outreach program, which collaborates with senior citizens at My Second Home in Mt. Kisco.

Trujillo said he is grateful for all of the opportunities the Club has provided. "The Boys & Girls Club has encouraged me to pursue my dreams," he said. "I am honored to be named Youth of the Year. I look forward to continuing my volunteer work with the Club and making a difference in other members' lives as they have in mine."

Barbara Cutri, Director of Operations, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern Westchester said she is proud of Trujillo for all of his accomplishments. "He truly is an exemplary member," she said.

Executive Director Brian Skanes said Trujillo has taken the Club's message to heart. "He is now practicing what he has learned here: to share your knowledge and talents to help others," Skanes said. "We are happy to see him using what he's acquired here to inspire other members and the surrounding community."

The Youth of the Year award will be presented at the Clubs' 11th annual Humanitarian Award Dinner on Friday, June 3, 2005 at the Westchester County Airport, Westair hangar. The dinner will honor Muffin Ziminsky, of Bedford, NY. The Humanitarian Award Dinner is open to all by advance reservation. A sit-down dinner will follow the cocktail reception and silent auction, which begins at 6:00 p.m. There will be an award presentation, live auction and dancing. Individual tickets are $350; group tables are also available. For further information regarding tickets and/or donations, contact Karen Ward at 914-666-8069.
